Juror’s Statement

Congratulations to the Arizona Watercolor Association on this beautiful exhibition. The artwork is inspiring, creative and highly professional. Jurying was a duty of love, personally rewarding and entertaining. I am proud to have been a part of the process.

I set out to judge work into a show. Excellence is a prime criteria, of course. But I like to see a balance, a variety of style and content. I look for the unusual, the original, the creative. I particularly respond to the artist who pushes the envelope. Now there is only so much wall space. When the spots are filled, the show is set. I congratulate the artists who make up this roster.

A lot of high quality work does not make the cut. The next 100 on my list would make a great show of themselves. I have received a number of rejection slips in my time and I know your disappointments.

My thanks to your directors and staff for making me welcome. And a special thank you to Norbert Baird for his help and encouragement.
